1.1This test method specifies a procedure for the sampling and analysis of airborne particulate matter for hexavalent chromium in ambient air samples.

1.2This method is applicable to the determination of masses of 0.40 to 20.0 ng of hexavalent chromium per sample without dilution. Detection limits vary by instrumentation. Some laboratories may be able to achieve lower detection limits. The lower limit of applicability for this method was determined in a 2019 multi-laboratory detection limit study (1).2

1.3This method is applicable to hexavalent chromium measurement in the atmosphere from 0.019 to 0.926 ng/m³ assuming a 21.6 m³ sample volume. The lower range may be decreased with longer sampling times. The upper range can be increased using appropriate dilutions.

1.4The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.5This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.6This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
